Zoos4You began with the peace of a quiet zoo day and grew into a lifetime of animal discoveries, family memories, and places still waiting to be explored.
WHERE IT BEGAN
Finding Peace at the San Diego Zoo.
Long before Zoos4You had a name, the San Diego Zoo was a place I returned to again and again. As a child and young adult, I spent hours there on my own, moving slowly through the habitats and letting the animals set the pace.
During a childhood illness, those visits gave me a place to breathe. The zoo was not only an outing. It was a peaceful space to observe, learn, and simply be present.
“A zoo can be a place of wonder, but it can also be a place to feel at peace.”
At the time, San Diego Zoo’s mascot was King Tut, an umbrella cockatoo. I still remember the character and the feeling of walking through a place where every path led to something new.
A SHARED ADVENTURE
Then Jim Came Along.
Eventually, I started bringing Jim with me. As the Navy sent him to different places, we looked for zoos wherever we landed. Each visit became a chance to spend a day together, meet animals we had never seen before, and see how another community cared for its wildlife.
Our zoo adventures continued as our children grew up, and then grew even more once they had children of their own. We have found that every zoo feels different: familiar enough to return to, yet full of surprises each time.
At the Albuquerque Zoo, we saw dogs among the guests for the first time. It was a small detail, but it reminded us that every zoo has its own personality, its own rules, and its own story.
